In a decision that will extend relief to Dalits living in villages, the UP Government has amended Uttar Pradesh Zamindari Abolition and land Reform Act allowing the Scheduled castes to sell their farmland to non-Dalits, Government spokesman said.

The decisions were approved by State Cabinet on Tuesday.

The Cabinet has allowed amendments in the Uttar Pradesh Zamindari Abolition and land Reforms Act 1950, under which a Dalit will no longer have to take permission from District Magistrate before selling his land to non-Dalits.

“There were some clauses in the Act which said that Dalit cannot sell his land to non-Dalit unless he takes permission from the DM. The law also said that DM cannot give permission if on the given day the area of the proposed land is less than 1.26 hectares or after selling a portion of the land the original land becomes less than 1.26 hectare. This clause was creating problem in selling land,” the spokesman said.
