The BJP on Wednesday said the comments of BJP President Rajnath Singh at a function here attended by Muslim leaders were presented in “a twisted manner” without putting them in a context.
BJP spokesperson Syed Shahnawaz Hussain said the party president was not referring to any particular incident when he addressed the Muslim community. Hussain said he himself was present at the function where the party president said the BJP has “always been very warm towards” the minority community and if any mistake was committed then that should be forgiven.
Hussain said the party president’s reference was to “ the perception of a mistake”. “Though the party has not committed any mistake..”, the spokesman added.
Apparently trying to reach out to Muslims ahead of the General Elections, Singh on Tuesday reportedly said that his party will ask for forgiveness if it had ever committed any mistake in the past. Hussain alleged it is Congress that has destroyed communal harmony. Answering questions, he said Gujarat riots were controlled with “full force” by the State Government.
