The investigation into the sensational murder of Indore’s transporter Raja Raghuwanshi has taken a deeper turn, with Meghalaya Director General of Police Idashisha Nongrang on Tuesday stating that the crime was not solely the result of a love triangle.
The DGP, speaking during a scene recreation exercise conducted by the police at the crime site in Sohagpur, said that investigators have found multiple underlying motives behind the killing, beyond just a failed romantic relationship.
Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Mayank Awasthi echoed the same, stating that while a romantic angle is one aspect, the investigation has uncovered compelling evidence pointing to broader motivations. Authorities remain confident about the strength of evidence collected across all dimensions of the case.
Raja Raghuwanshi had recently married Sonam Khushwanshi, but their relationship quickly soured. Police believe Sonam conspired with her brothers — Govind, Deepak, and Mohar — to kill Raja. On May 23, they allegedly lured him to Sohagpur on false pretenses, strangled him with a mobile phone charger cable, and suffocated him by stuffing a ten-rupee note in his mouth. Forensic and crime scene investigation teams from Bhopal have assisted in collecting vital evidence from the scene. All four accused have been arrested and formal charges have been filed.
During interrogation, Raja’s brother Sachin revealed that Sonam had confessed to the murder, admitting her brothers helped execute the plan. One of the most disturbing revelations in the case came from Sachin’s testimony — Sonam reportedly manipulated Raja into believing that offering his life as a sacrifice would cure her ailing father. Shockingly, Raja is said to have agreed.
The police recreated the crime scene on Tuesday with all the accused present, to better understand the sequence of events. DGP Nongrang confirmed that investigations are continuing to explore all possible angles, and that more facts are likely to emerge as the inquiry progresses.
The case, marked by its grim blend of emotional manipulation and cold-blooded violence, continues to send shockwaves across the region.
