Blaming Prime Minister’s Office for driving the National Herald issue, AICC vice-president and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday vowed to fight the issue legally even as he expressed his confidence that the Congress will form the next Government in Assam for the fourth consecutive term.

The AICC leader was here on a two-day visit to the State.

During his visit, Gandhi is likely to kick-start the party’s official poll campaign from Assam’s Barpeta district on Saturday by taking part in a ‘pad yatra’ (road show) before returning to the national Capital the same day.

“The issue of National Herald is being driven by the Prime Minister’s Office. The PMO is trying to politicise the issue, which is unfortunate. However, it’s a non-profit company and it’s very clear. let’s see what happens on the 19th of this month,” said Gandhi, while referring to the next date of the court when he along with his mother is supposed to appear in the court.

The AICC leader arrived here at around 1.30 pm on Friday and interacted with a group of women entrepreneurs. later, he addressed the party workers during a separate meeting.

Gandhi expressed his confidence about the party’s position in Assam and said the Congress would form the next Government in Assam. “As far as Assam is concerned, I am confident that Congress will demonstrate exactly who is going to win this election in Assam. We have just defeated our opponents in Bihar and we are going to do the same in Assam in the 2016 polls,” he said, while adding that the Congress party as well as the Government had worked for the people of Assam in the past years.

Asked about any alliance with other political parties ahead of the 2016 Assembly polls, Gandhi said a decision in this regard would be taken by the Chief Minister and the Chief of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC).

“The Chief Minister is in charge in Assam. I am confident that both the Chief Minister and PCC president will take a decision in this regard as and when necessary,” he said, and added the party was in conversation with some parties and a decision would be taken.
