Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Friday said the State police has initiated the process to bring content creator Amir Shokeen, who is in Delhi Police custody in connection with an alleged racial abuse case, to the northeastern State for investigation. The Delhi-based content creator was arrested on Thursday after a video allegedly showing him subjecting a youth from Tripura to racial abuse and humiliation went viral on social media.

“As soon as I got the report of the arrest of the Delhi-based social media influencer, I contacted DGP GS Rao and instructed him to reach out to Delhi Police to bring him to our State. Our team has already reached Delhi and is in the process of bringing the accused to the state, where a specific case was lodged for abusing a youth from the state,” Saha told reporters.

“Since Shokeen is currently in Delhi Police custody, we will bring him to the State following all legal procedures,” he said.

Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Manchak Ipper also confirmed that Tripura Police were coordinating with their Delhi counterparts to bring the content creator to the state on transit remand for investigation.

“Currently, the content creator is in Delhi Police custody in connection with a specific case. Our team is camping in Delhi. We will definitely bring the accused to the state once Delhi Police’s custody ends for investigation,” Ipper said.

A case was registered against Shokeel at the New Capital Complex (NCC) police station in West Tripura district on Thursday under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, the Information Technology Act, 2000, and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.

The case relates to a video circulating on social media in which racial slurs were allegedly directed at a person from Tripura.

The development comes amid widespread condemnation of the viral video on social media, with Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju and Saha calling for action against the content creator.
