Opp parties demand probe by retired SC judge into deaths in Kashmir

PNS

The Opposition parties in Kashmir on Wednesday demanded probe into the recent civilian killing in Kashmir by a retired Supreme Court judge and urged for stopping the use of pellet guns on protesters.

The four-hour meeting called by Opposition National Conference (NC) passed a resolution that urged the BJP-led Central Government to start political dialogue with Pakistan over resolution of Kashmir issue.

“Kashmir is a political issue and it will be resolved through a political dialogue,” the resolution said.

Initiated by NC president and former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, the meeting was held at NC patron Dr Farooq Abdullah’s residence to discuss the prevailing situation and unabated civilian killings by security forces. The JKPCC president GA Mir, CPM State Secretary and legislator MY Tarigami, Hakim Mohammad Yasin and Awami Ittihad Party chief Sheikh Rashid and former minister Ghulam Hassan Mir were among the prominent leaders who attended the meeting.

They also discussed the “failure” of the State and Central Governments to restore normalcy in the State.

Omar told reporters after the meeting that the present situation does not demand shifting of power but stopping killings of civilians. “The fate of the Government will be decided in people’s court later,” he said when asked if the Opposition parties demand resignation of Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti.

Sheikh Rashid later said in a statement that he had proposed to pass a resolution seeking right to self determination for people of J&K and had suggested that legislators belonging to the opposition parties must tender resignation from the assembly in order to build pressure upon New Delhi to ackno-wledge the dispute of Kashmir. He said his suggestions found no takers in the meeting.
