Opp: Centre ignored farmers' well-being

PNS

The Opposition on Wednesday raised the farmers' plight in Parliament and accused the Government  of "complete failure" in dealing with the issue as the treasury side in the lok Sabha claimed that the Modi dispensation had worked more for them than any regime in the past.

Slogan-shouting  Congress members in the lower house along with other opposition parties like TMC, left and RJD rushed into the Well as soon as the proceedings commenced and forced the adjournment  of the House   for nearly an hour.

The Opposition blamed  the Government for allegedly ignoring the well-being of farmers.BJP ally and Swabhimani Paksha (SWP) MP Raju Shetti also sparred with BJP members over the issue.

After the House met again at noon, leader of the Congress in the lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge attacked the Government again, despite Speaker Sumitra Mahajan saying that a debate on the issue was scheduled later in the day and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar saying that the Government would answer all questions raised by Opposition members.

"There is an agrarian crisis. The agriculture sector is devastated. The number of farmers committing suicide has been rising by the day. The government has completely failed in dealing with their problems. Their loans should be waived and the government should fulfill its promise of paying them 50 per cent more than their input costs," Kharge said.

Kumar said no government had done as much for farmers as the Modi dispensation had.Protesting Congress, NCP, TMC, left, RJD and National Conference members then staged a walkout.Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was present in the House  during the Question Hour when Opposition members were protesting.

SWP member  Shetti charged  the government with not fulfilling promises made to famers by Narendra Modi during the election campaign in 2014 that they would be paid for their produce 50 per cent more than their input cost.

He also raised the issue of farmers' death in Mandsaur in Madhya Pradesh, alleging  that the one of them was killed by police after being called  to the police station.

"Is the farmer a terroristIJ We need a CBI probe into the matter," Shetti said and later walked out of the house.

In Rajya Sabha, JDU member Sharad Yadav alleged that  15 to 20 farmers were daily committing  suicide all over the country . He said  protesting farmers were camping  in Delhi since Tuesday and asked why government was importing 'dal' when there is a distress sale of it by farmers. Congress MP  Digvijay Singh asked  why government was silent on the issue IJ. At this Deputy chairman P J Kurein said government had agreed to a discussion on agrarian  crisis. Opposition demanded that  the discussion be held on Thursday to which Kurien said "as soon as possible."

later in the afternoon, lok Sabha debated on agrarian crisis under Rule 193. Initiating the debate Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia unleashed attack on BJP Governments for police atrocities in several states against protesting farmers.

BJP MPs lead by Ganesh Singh objected to Scindia's remarks and accused Congress of engineering violence in the agitations. Parliamentary Affairs Minister and Scindia were engaged in war of words over the issue on providing video proof on this regard. Many MPs pointed out several instances of lack of specific policies to agrarian crisis and non-responsive attitude of bankers on the plight of farmers.
