One commuter was killed, while nine others were injured when five coaches of a suburban train derailed near Titwala on the Central Railway, in the neighbouring Thane district on Thursday afternoon.

The mishap occurred at 2.30 pm, when five coaches of a Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST)-bound local train derailed between Titwala and Ambivli stations, 61 km from CST.Identifying the killed commuter as Dhawal Mayur loday (20), a Central Railway spokesperson said that of the nine injured, four had sustained grievous wounds.

“Out of total 9 injured, one person who sustained simple injury was discharged from Kalyan. Four injured persons are at Fortis Hospital at Kalyan, while four others are at Railway Hospital, also at Kalyan,” the spokesperson said.

The mishap threw the train traffic on the busy Central Railway out of gear. The CR authorities ran suburban services between CST-Kalyan stations and Titwala-Kasara stations, after suspending many of the suburban trains between Kalyan and Titwala. Simultaneously, several of the long-distance trains were diverted.

“long-distance trains will be diverted to run via Kalyan-Pune-Daund-Manmad till the restoration of railway line,” the CR spokesperson said.
