ADMISSION: Unlike previous year, students who have not registered at Allahabad University (AU) for admissions to undergraduate (UG) courses through the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) will not be allowed to seek admission in constituent colleges of the university this year. The decision was taken at a meeting with the principals of the college. Besides, the admission cell gave necessary guidelines to the colleges for admission. It was said that the results of CUET will be given to the colleges. Admission will be done against about 17,000 UG seats (BA, BSc, BCom, BALLB, professional courses) at AU and its constituent colleges. The entire process for taking admission both at AU’s main campus and any of the constituent colleges, is being done online. Admission at AU and some of the constituent colleges has already started. Last year, candidates, who had appeared in CUET but had not registered for AU, were allowed to get admission in constituent colleges, owing to fall in merit list. “This was done as one-time relaxation as admission through CUET was done for the first time and was completed quite late. However, this time, as things are moving as per schedule, we are not allowing admission in constituent colleges, if the candidate has not filled the option for AU”, said one of the senior professors of AU associated with admission cell. Meanwhile, results of BA-II for AU and the colleges have been released. While 8,100 students have cleared the exam, 713 qualified will appear for the second exam. Likewise, 248 have failed, 93 were absent and 29 were caught using unfair means. At Institute of Engineering and Rural Technology (IERT), admission in diploma in engineering for the academic session 2023-24 started on Tuesday. All the seats of general and OBC category in electrical engineering got filled on the first day itself. Similarly, all the seats of general category in civil engineering have also been filled. Total, 13 branches of diploma engineering are taught in IERT.
INITIATIVE: The bhajan-kirtan troupes and organisations that perform during Ramlila and Krishnalila, which are slowly becoming extinct in the era of DJ’s, will now be given a platform by the state government. Such groups who have been giving religious musical performances for at least five years will be registered under this initiative. In the coming days, they will also get an opportunity to perform in big government events. A letter was written on behalf of Principal Secretary Mukesh Kumar Meshram to the district magistrates of all the districts of the state. The letter instructs finding such artists on the gram panchayat level who have been into singing bhajan-kirtan on religious occasions and who have at least five years of experience, presenting this art form. “Folk troupes that have special significance in our cultural identity are now becoming almost extinct. There was a time when these troupes used to give regular performances in rural areas”, says Kanchan Yadav, one of the folk artists of the trans-Ganga area. The soothing music of ‘dholak’, table, harmonium and ‘manjira’ (all musical instruments) somewhere got lost in noise of the DJ, artist added. But, after the initiative of the state government, this ancient tradition will be revived once again. Musical groups can register themselves on the portal—https// upculture. up. nic. in. Free registration can be done at in/ home/ registration/. Opportunity will be given to such registered groups to perform in local fairs, festivals, programmes organised by the Cultural department of the government. The groups who want to register themselves should have experience of performances for at least five years, the group (mandali) should have at least five and a maximum of 25 members. If the congregation or party is associated with any temple or institution, then they should have a certificate from there regarding the same.
