The National People’s Party (NPP) leader and youth affairs and Sports Minister Letpao Haokip in the N Biren Singh Government here on Wednesday joined the BJP.
BJP is expected not to have a pre-poll alliance with the NPP ahead of the Manipur legislative assembly election early, next year.
BJP hopes that Haokip’s popularity as an international football player would attract youngsters to the party.
The development may bring NPP and the BJP on the path of political conflict in Mehalaya and Arunachal Pradesh too.
Presently BJP is running the government in Manipur with the backing of the National People’s Party.
