Non-internet based mobile users will now be able to book their train tickets through their phone. Railway Minister Mallikarjun Kharge on Friday launched the SMS-based ticketing system, a pilot project of Indian Railways Catering & Tourism Corporation (IRCTC).
“Since mobile penetration in India has increased rapidly and more than 80 per cent people have mobile phones, this new system will be helpful in enabling booking of tickets by masses themselves,” Kharge said.
IRCTC Chairman-cum-Managing Director Rakesh Tandon said, “Through this service, customer can not only book ticket but also search for stations, trains, PNR enquiry and make cancellation.”
Railway Board Chairman Vinay Mittal said the SMS-based ticketing system service will be improved further with provision of more payment options, user-friendly interface and value-added services like alerts and updates.
