A notification to allow e-rickshaws to ply in the national Capital will be issued soon. Citing safety issues, the Delhi High Court had banned their services in the NCR region in July this year.

“A notification pertaining to e-rickshaw will be put on website seeking people’s opinion on it in the next ten days and we will solve the problem immediately thereafter,” said Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said

“Safety and other concerns raised over plying of e-rickshaws have been taken care of and necessary steps were on to give them legal cover  with necessary modifications in rules and law,” said Gadkari.

The court had on July 31 banned plying of e-rickshaws on the roads of the National Capital saying there should be a proper guideline to regulate them.

The Delhi High Court on September 9 had ordered the continuance on the ban on e-rickshaws in the capital as they were “illegal as per existing laws” and had rejected Centre’s plea to allow them to ply till rules are framed to regulate them.

The High Court bench had left it to Parliament and the Centre to decide what legislative changes need to be introduced to regulate the plying of e-rickshaws.

The Ministry of Transport and the association had pleaded with the Court to allow provisional plying of e-rickshaws on the basis of temporary guidelines framed by the Centre until the laws were framed.
