No anticipatory bail for Teesta

PNS

The Supreme Court on Monday denied anticipatory bail to social activist Teesta Setalvad and her husband in a case lodged against them in Ahmedabad for alleged embezzlement of funds. The Court, however, extended their interim protection till March end to permit them approach Bombay High Court.

The couple had approached the apex court against the January 31 order of the Bombay High Court that denied them bail but granted them protection till February 28 to approach the Gujarat High Court. The duo were booked on charges of cheating, breach of trust and under provisions of IT Act, in a matter related to construction of ‘Museum of Resistance’ in the Gulbarg society in Ahmedabad, hit by communal riot in 2002.

A bench comprising Justices SJ Mukhopadhaya and Kurian Joseph allowed the HC to examine the question whether anticipatory bail can be entertained in cases registered in different States.
