In a much talked-about sexual assault case of two Surat-based sisters, the Chief Judicial Magistrate JN Thakkar sent Narayan Sai, son of imprisoned self-styled godman Asaram Bapu, to six days police custody. Police had demanded for 14 days custody, but the court granted remand up to December 11.
Sai’s two accomplices Kaushal Thakur alias Hanuman and his driver Ramesh Malhotra were also sent in police custody till December 11 and December 7 respectively.
Sai, 40, who had gone underground after two sisters from Surat filed rape complaints against his father and him, was arrested from Pipli near Kurukshetra, 90 km from Chandigarh. Four of his aides — Kaushal Thakur (29) alias Hanuman, Ramesh (27), his driver, Bhavika, his disciple, and a juvenile working as a cook — have also been arrested who were traveling with Sai.
Following his arrest Sai was produced before Rohini District Courts on Wednesday morning. The court allowed 24-hour custody of the self-styled godman to Gujarat Police, which secured his transit remand for producing him before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court in Surat. He was brought to Surat on Thursday morning and his medical check-up was done before he was presented in the court.
Meanwhile, district Government pleader in Surat had sought Sai’s custodial remand for various reasons on Thursday evening, including finding out the truth behind complaint of sexual assault against him. Surat Police also said that his remand was required as they obtained a CD and some controversial document in which Sai had allegedly faked notary signature.
