With Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity unrelenting stand of refusing to give children up for adoption to single, divorced or separated people, the Government has also decided to derecognise 13 orphanages run by them.

Women and child development (WCD) minister Maneka Gandhi said on Wednesday made it clear that the charity's non-compliance with the adoption guidelines, are leaving the Government with no option but to derecognise them.

"The Ministry recognises the good work done by organisations like Missionaries of Charity. However, it is reiterated that the new guidelines, prepared after an elaborate consultation process, have to be followed by all child care institutions involved in the process of adoption," said the WCD ministry in a press statement.

The Missionaries of Charity has refused to comply with the provisions related to adoptions by single, separated or divorced people citing ideological issues. They refused to comply with adoption guidelines related to giving a child up for adoption to single, unwed mothers.
