Pioneer News Service

In a rerun of mob violence in Malda where thousands of locals torched a police station, BSF vehicles and many other private vehicles on National Highway 34, hundreds of people armed with brickbats and sticks attacked police and vehicles on the same road at Farakka some 35 km away.

Officially Farakka is in the neighbouring Murshidabad district but the gentry are hardly any different from those residing at Kaliachak at Malda which shot in the news for burning down the local police station.

local SDPO, a circle inspector and about 15 other policemen received grievous injuries when they tried to clear a road blockade staged by locals protesting against a road accident in which a school girl was killed.

Three vehicles were torched and many others were damaged, sources said.

Central Industrial Security Forces and RAF had to be deployed to bring the crowd under control, police said. The area is barely a few miles away from Bangladesh and hence is crime prone police said.
