Actor-turned politician Mithun Chakraborty on Monday resigned from his Rajya Sabha membership citing health reasons.
In his resignation letter to Rajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari, Chakraborty said that because of his poor health condition he is not been able to fulfill his duty in the Upper House and is relinquishing the seat.
Chakraborty was nominated to the Rajya Sabha by Trinamool Congress (TMC) in January 2014 and he became a Member of Parliament in April 2014. His term was due to end in 2020. However, the actor rarely attended the Parliament. He had skipped last two Parliament sessions due to health reasons.
News reports claimed that allegation of Chakraborty’s involvement in the Saradha Chit Fund Scam was also possibly one of the reasons behind his decision to quit Rajya Sabha.
Chakraborty is the second Rajya Sabha member to resign in the last six months. In July, BJP nominee Navjot Singh Siddhu had quit the Upper House.
