Manish Tewari slams NDA for 'toppling' Uttarakhand Govt

Anup Sharma

launching a scathing attack on the BJP-led NDA Government at the Centre, AICC spokesman Manish Tewari on Monday condemned the imposition of Presidents’ Rule in Uttrakhand and alleged that the BJP is trying to murder the democracy in India.

“During the last 22 months, the BJP-run Government has murdered democracy for the second time in the country by imposing a President’s Rule in Uttrakhand. Earlier the same was done in Arunachal Pradesh,” said Tewari while addressing the newsmen at the Congress headquarters, Rajiv Bhawan in Guwahati on Monday.

He said that the Modi Government had imposed President’s Rule in a State within two months after it was imposed in Arunachal Pradesh.

“I would like to point out that when the Governor had given time to the State Chief Minister for a floor test, when every decision of Supreme Court on Bommai case says that a floor test is the only way to test the majority of a Government, then why did the Prime Minister and his Cabinet unceremoniously, almost through a coup, topple the Government in UttarakhandIJ” he asked.

“The decision of disqualification of MlAs by the Speaker is subject to judicial review. Imposition of Art 356 is circumventing the Constitution,” he added.
