Mamata targets NDA for 'encouraging intolerance'

Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee once again raised the “intolerance issue” on Thursday circuitously blaming the BJP-led NDA Government for allowing intolerance “for the past one-and-a-half-years”.

Calling “certain statements” made by some leaders as “unfortunate and irresponsible” and “only made to gain political points”, Banerjee on Thursday said “such statements should not be made in a multi-cultural and multi-religion society like ours.”

“For the past one-and-a-half-year there has been a rise in instances of mutual intolerance” she said and added “there are some people who are making such irresponsible remarks for political dividend which should be stopped.” But this should be stopped. We must not make such irresponsible statements.”

Wondering “who we are to dictate what the other people should eat or where they should go and live or what they should wear,” Banerjee said adding “no one has a right to interfere in the freedom of other people. This is against the basic tenet of our Constitution.”

“There are some people who are trying to foment trouble in the country which is not the right thing. They are doing so because they do not have the development agenda before them,” she maintained.

Incidentally Banerjee’s party MP Moon Moon Sen had on Tuesday said on the issue of intolerance that “I think we should give Mr Narendra Modi a chance to do something as a Prime Minister.”
