Mamata attacks BJP over CBI row

Alleged politicalisation of the Central Bureau of Investigation came in for severe criticism from Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee who on Wednesday questioned the agency’s credibility saying the present Government in Delhi had turned CBI into BBI or BJP Bureau of Investigation.

“CBI has now become so called BBI (BJP Bureau of Investigation) — very unfortunate!” Mamata tweeted hours after two topmost officers of the Agency — Director Alok Verma and Special Director Rakesh Asthana —were unceremoniously removed from their posts along with many other senior officials.

Mamata who has always been critical of the Narendra Modi Government for allegedly using the CBI and Enforcement Directorate against Opposition outfits earlier said that the electorate would give a befitting reply to the saffron party for its arrogance.

“Their (BJP) days are numbered because the people are waiting for a chance which will come in 2019 when they will be thrown out of power,” Mamata had recently said in a party meeting alleging the Narendra Modi Government had done nothing except delivering tall talks and false hopes.

The Bengal saffron leadership however rejected Mamata’s claims saying CBI had not been influenced by the BJP.

“Despite their false allegations the BJP Government had never interfered with the functioning of the CBI. Had it been so then most of the Trinamool Congress leaders would have been jail,”

State BJP president Dilip Ghosh said drawing the Left Front to put a counter question as to whether the BJP was using the Sharada and Narada cases against the TMC selectively and for political purposes.

“Dilip Ghosh’s statement itself proves that the CBI

is not acting properly. It is using the Sharada and Narada handle during the elections keeping BJP’s political gains in view otherwise they would have arrested many TMC leaders by now,” said CPI(M)’s Sujan Chakrabarty.

Meanwhile, senior Trinamool leader and MP Sudip Bandopadhyay on Wednesday said he had been praying for an “elevation” for Mamata Banerjee.

When asked as to what he prayed before Goddess Laxmi on (Wednesday’s) Laxmi Puja, he said “I had prayed during the Durga Puja and now also I pray before the Mother Goddess that our Chief Minister be given an elevation to topmost post of the country so that not only of Bengal the people but the people of the entire country gets the benefit of her good governance.”

In an unrelated development Banerjee on Wednesday criticized the Railway administration for mishandling the affairs in the Railway Stations which led to the stampede and death of two persons at Santragachi Railway Station in Howrah on Tuesday.

“There has been a lack of coordination and mismanagement that led to the Tuesday’s mishaps.

Similar situation prevails in many Railway Stations which should be taken care of immediately,” Banerjee said.

Two persons were killed and about 17 injured on Tuesday’s stampede at Santragachi station a satellite Railway junction of Kolkata and Howrah when passengers of 4-5 trains — including an EMU entered the

platform at a time — jostled for space on a foot over bridge leading to a stampede.
