The Opposition Congress on Monday rooted for Maharashtra’s high-profile Education Minister Vinod Tawde’s resignation following a revelation by a regional television that an engineering degree that he had obtained is from a non-recoginised University. The State Congress came up with its demand for Tawade’s resignation, within hours after a regional television channel “Mi Marathi” aired a story saying that the Electronics engineering degree held by Tawde was “bogus” since the engineering degree that he had obtained from the Pune-based Sant Dnyaneshwar University was “bogus”. The television channel stated that the Dnyaneshwar Vidyapeeth was not affiliated with UGC or AICTE or Maharashtra’s Directorate of Technical Education and that the Bombay High Court had ruled in 2005 that the Dnyaneshwar Vidyapeeth did not have any rights to award degrees, and that the degrees issued even before 2005 were invalid.
Talking to media at the city party office, Mumbai Congress chief Sanjay Nirupam said: “Since the Bombay HC had, in its ruling in 2005, stated that the Dnyaneshwar Vidyapeeth from which the Minister obtained his engineering degree, was not a recognised varsity, Fadnavis should dismiss Tawde for making a false claim.”
