Hyderabad: Suspended Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA and former IPS officer Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh on Monday announced that he had resigned as a member of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha.

Singh, who represents the Amritsar North constituency, submitted his resignation to Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan.

"I have resigned from the membership of Punjab Vidhan Sabha," Singh wrote in a Facebook post, in which he also shared a copy of his resignation letter.

"I hereby tender my resignation of my seat in the House with effect from 1.11.2026," Singh wrote in his communication to the Punjab Assembly Speaker.

His resignation comes a day after two other AAP legislators, Chetan Singh Jouramajra from Samana and Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra from Sanour, both in Punjab's Patiala district, resigned from the party's primary membership on Sunday.

In June last year, Singh was suspended from the party for five years over allegations of anti-party activities.

His suspension followed his criticism of the Punjab Vigilance Bureau's action against Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia, who was arrested in a disproportionate assets case.

Singh had remained a vocal critic of the AAP government on several issues.

He had previously expressed dissatisfaction with the government's handling of the 2015 sacrilege and police-firing cases in Faridkot, demanding justice in the matter.

Singh was part of the Punjab Police special investigation team (SIT) that probed the 2015 Kotkapura and Behbal Kalan police-firing incidents.

He also repeatedly raised the 2015 sacrilege issue in the Assembly.

Singh had further criticised the Bhagwant Mann-led government following the deaths of more than 20 people due to the consumption of spurious liquor in Amritsar last year.

After taking premature retirement from the police service in 2021, Singh joined the AAP and was subsequently elected as the MLA from Amritsar North in the 2022 Assembly elections. (wit inputs from PTI)
