Three people were arrested after a young man and his father were allegedly stripped naked and paraded through the streets of Behala in Kolkata over the man's relationship with a woman, police said on Monday.
The alleged incident took place on Sunday in the Basundhara Park area under the Sarsuna police station limits. Those arrested included the woman's father and maternal uncle, an officer said.
According to the preliminary investigation, the woman's family allegedly caught the young man with her and confined him inside a house. The woman's father and maternal uncle allegedly assaulted him before his father was summoned to the spot.
The family then allegedly handed the young man's father a firearm and threatened him with a choice: either kill his son or walk naked through the streets, the officer said.
The father and son were subsequently stripped and allegedly paraded in public, he added.
A friend of the young man was also reportedly assaulted and subjected to similar humiliation, according to the officer.
A video purportedly showing the incident has gone viral on social media. PTI could not independently verify its authenticity.
The video triggered tension in the locality, with angry residents allegedly attempting to vandalise the woman's house. A police team rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control, the officer said.
Some members of the woman's family allegedly fled before the police arrived. Her maternal uncle was caught by local residents and handed over to the police, the officer added.
