In a major setback to Kerala Police, Shajan Scaria, chief editor of a popular news portal who was arrested from Nilambur in Malappuram district was granted bail by the Ernakulam District Court late Saturday evening. The action of police team which arrested Scaria while coming out of Nilambur Police Station came under severe criticism of the Court.
“He presented himself before the Nilambur Police Station for questioning as per the directive of the Kerala High Court.
Arresting a person who presented himself before the police inspector as per the Court directive for questioning in connection with a case is like ridiculing the judicial system,” said the District Judge while granting Scaria bail.
While the journalist reached the Nilambur Police Station for being interrogated in connection with a case of spreading hatred against two communities, the Ernakulam Police team took him into custody based on a complaint filed by a Delhi-based businessman to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan against Scaria.
