DMK chief M Karunanidhi will lead State-wide demonstrations on August 8 to pressurise the Sri lankan Government to implement the 13th Amendment of that country’s Constitution and for a referendum among the Tamils in the island nation to ascertain their requirements. The decision was taken in a meeting of the Tamil Eelam Supporters Organisation presided over by Karunanidhi on Tuesday.
The TESO was launched by Karunanidhi in the early 80s focusing on the creation of a separate Eelam for the ethnic Tamils in the island nation. Following the death of MGR and subsequent elections to Tamil Nadu Assembly, Karunanidhi became the Chief Minister and TESO was given a silent burial. But with the shock defeat in the 2011 Assembly election, the DMK chief revived TESO in alliance with Dradidar Kazhakam led by K Veeramani and VCK led by Thol. Thirumavalavan. During the last couple of months, the DMK chief was busy strategising the re-election of his daughter Kanimozhi to the Rajya Sabha from Tamil Nadu.
