J'khand to phase out CRPF deployment

Mukesh Ranjan

To reduce the burden on the State exchequer, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) deployed in the left wing extremism affected areas of Jharkhand in anti-Naxal operations will be phased out within a period of five years.

The SPs of the all the districts have been asked to minimise the dependency on CRPF personnel and take help of State police in carrying out anti-rebel operations.

The matter was also discussed by the Home Secretary NN Pandey with the Finance Commission members during its visit in Ranchi. The Commission members are said to have asked the Home department to take adequate steps to raise a parallel force on the lines of CRPF so that it could be gradually phased out from the State.

The Home Secretary maintained in his presentation before the commission that the local force will be more suitable in developing co-ordination with the local police and the villagers. Being acquainted with the local terrain, they can also take on the Maoists more effectively, thinks the Government.

It will also cost less on the State exchequer. “It’s true that the burden on the state exchequer on deploying CRPF personnel for anti-Naxal operations is very high which is to be minimised by the year 2015 and we have planned to phase it out gradually in the next five years,” said a top police official in the Police headquarters requesting anonymity.

According to the official, all the SPs in the districts have been asked to reduce the use of CRPF personnel in the operations.
