The condition of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, who is undergoing treatment at Apollo Hospitals in Chennai since September 22 for fever and dehydration, continues to improve and is making gradual progress, according to a release issued by the hospital on late Thursday evening. But the release said that the panel of experts attending to the Chief Minister was of the opinion that she would require a longer stay in the hospital.

“The comprehensive treatment plan including appropriate antibiotics, respiratory support and other allied clinical measures are being continued. The Chief Minister is under observation of a panel of doctors consisting of intensivists, cardiologists, respiratory physicians, infectious disease specialists and diabetologists. Detailed lab and radiology investigations are continuously carried out by the panel of doctors,” said the release.

It further stated that a team of experts from All India Institute of Medical Sciences consisting of Dr GC Khilnani, professor, pulmonary medicine, Dr Anjan Trikha , professor, anaesthesiology, Dr Nitish Naik, Department of cardiology had detailed deliberations on Wednesday on the treatment protocols provided to the Chief Minister by the specialists team at Apollo Hospitals.

Meanwhile the Madras High Court on Thursday dismissed a PIl filed by a social activist seeking a detailed report from the Government of Tamil Nadu about the health of Jayalalithaa.

While dismissing the PIl filed by KR Ramaswamy, popularly known as Traffic Ramaswamy, the first bench consisting of Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and justice R Mahadevan warned the petitioner for using the court as a political forum. “This forum should not be used for political purposes as we feel this is a publicity interest litigation and not a public interest litigation,” said the judges.

The petitioner had asked the court to direct the Tamil Nadu Government to furnish “real” details of the health status of the Chief Minister.

“The people of Tamil Nadu are anxious to know about the health condition of Jayalalithaa,” Ramaswamy had said in the petition. He had also demanded the release of the photographs of the meetings which were reported to have been convened by Jayalalithaa in the hospital to discuss various issues of the state.

“The hospital is already issuing medical bulletins. Hence the PIl is dismissed,” said the judges in their order. M Karunanidhi, the DMK chief, too had  expressed his desire to see the photographs of Jayalalithaa .

Elsewhere in Tamil Nadu, S Saravanan (60), a firework factory employee at Sreevilliputtur, committed suicide on Wednesday following depression over reports about Jayalalithaa’s health. Cadres belonging to the AIADMK continued holding mass prayers, poojas, homams and yagnas all over the State for the speedy recovery of Jayalalithaa.

With the Madras High Court quashing the notification to the local Body elections issued by the State Election Commission on Thursday, the political fever which had gripped the state since last week has come down all of a sudden. The State Election Commission may have to issue a fresh notification while it is almost sure that the elections scheduled for October 17 and 19 would not take place as scheduled.
