A young police officer, currently serving as Sub-Inspector (on Probation) was 'mercilessly' shot dead by an 'unidentified' terrorist in Khanyar area of Srinagar on Sunday.

This is the third incident of targeted killing involving policemen in Srinagar this year.

The police officer has been identified as Arshid Ashraf Meer, hailing from North Kashmir district of Kupwara.

Shortly after the police officer was targeted a CCTV footage of the attack surfaced which clearly revealed an 'unidentified' terrorist pumped bullets  from behind using a pistol while the young officer stepped out of a building in the area.

Apparently, the police officer was being tracked by the terrorist. After hitting the cop the terrorist was seen running away in an opposite direction without facing any resistance.

The mortal remains of the police officer were later handed over to the family after a brief wreath laying ceremony.

Large number of relatives and close family friends assembled at their residence in Handwara to offer their condolences to the bereaved family members of the police officer.

In February 2021, two  policemen were shot dead from a close range by a terrorist in Barzulla area of Srinagar  while they were waiting for their tea cups.

Then in the month of June,  Inspector Parvaiz Ahmad Dar, working with the criminal investigation department (CID) wing  was shot near his house in Nowgam when he was returning home after offering evening prayers.

Meanwhile, in Jammu region a terrorist was killed by a joint team of security forces in Thanamandi area of Rajouri.  According to ADGP (Jammu range) Mukesh Singh one terrorist has been neutralised in the ongoing operations in the thickly forested area of Thanamandi in Rajouri. Till the time of filing the report the operation was still going on in the area.
