IPS officer in soup for praising NaMo

A senior Bihar police official has been served showcause notice merely for taking name of BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi in his speech at a private function in Darbhanga. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s political allergy with Narendra Modi is an open secret in the country and the State as well.

A 1986 batch IPS officer, RK Mishra was served the showcause notice for taking name of BJP’s PM candidate Narendra Modi in a reference at a function in Darbhanga district in November last to mark the death anniversary of noted Maithali poet Vidyapati. The function was organised by Vidyapati Seva Sansthan at the Mithila Vibhuti Parva function at Darbhanga.

In his speech at the function, the police officer who then was serving as Additional Director General of Police (modernisation) had made reference of Narendra Modi’s address in party’s rally on October 27. Modi had briefly addressed the audience at the rally in Maithali language. The police officer cited the example of Modi for exhorting the masses to champion the cause of the language.

Sources told The Pioneer that the State police headquarters had procured video footage of the function on November 23 and had written to the Government to initiate departmental proceedings against the police officer for making “political speech”. “He has been served notice for addressing a public meeting,” said Bihar Home Secretary Amir Subhani.

The showcause notice was served to Mishra a week ago before he left for Delhi to join his new posting as the Inspector General of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). Mishra, could not be contacted for his comments on the issue. However, it is reliably learnt that before leaving for Delhi, police officer RK Mishra has replied the notice served to him.

Meanwhile, the general secretary of the function’s organising body Vidyapati Seva Sansthan has said that “it was purely a cultural programme and all the talk revolved around Mithila language and its propagation”. The BJP member of Parliament from Darbhanga, Kirti Jha Azad, the Vice Chancellors of Kameshwar Singh Darbhanga Sanskrit University (KSDSU) and lalit Narain Mithila University (lNMU) too were present on the occasion along with local MlAs and other local academicians.

The State Government had received a letter from the Union Home Ministry on December 27 last year to relieve RK Mishra and following that letter the State Government relieved him for the Central forces on January 13. Mishra left the State capital for Delhi on Monday. Meanwhile, the showcause notice served to the senior police official apparently for taking name of Narendra Modi in his speech at a private function has caused a buzz in the corridors of the State police headquarters.
