Indrani discharged, back in jail

TN RAGHUNATHA

Indrani Mukherjea, the former CEO of INX Media Pvt ltd and key accused in the Sheena Bora murder case, was discharged from the JJ Hospital here on Tuesday, even as a city court reserved its order till Wednesday on the CBI’s application seeking permission to interrogate her and two other accused in the sensational crime.

Hours after Dean of State-run hospital TP lahane said that Indrani was fully conscious, her vital parameters were and she was responding well to the medications, the accused-cum-high-profile patient was discharged from the hospital.  “Indrani has been discharged and sent back to the jail,” lahane said.

Ahead of Indrani’s discharge from the hospital, the authorities submitted her medical report to the court in a sealed envelope. On her part, she conveyed to the court through her lawyer that she had no objection to her being interrogated by the CBI in the judicial custody.

After hearing the CBI’s plea seeking the court’s permission to interrogate three accused in the judicial custody and considering Indrani’s submission that she had no objection to being quizzed by the central agency, Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate of Esplanade court RV Adone reserved his ruling in the matter, till Wednesday. “The order will be passed tomorrow,” Adone noted.

The CBI had moved the Magistrate’s court on Monday, seeking its permission to interrogate the three accused —Indrani, her second husband Sanjeev Khanna and driver Shyamvar Rai — in the judicial custody, on the ground that such an interrogation was necessary for the central agency, as it had taken over the investigations from the Mumbai police just a week ago.

In its application, the CBI had told the court that it needed at least three weeks to interrogate Indrani and two other accused in the jail.

While Indrani is lodged at the Byculla women under-trials’ lock-up, Khanna and Rai are in the Arthur Road prison.

The CBI had also told that the court that in the event of their being denied permission to interrogate the three accused in the judicial custody, it would have to rely on the investigations conducted by the Mumbai police, a thing that would come in its way in going into the thick of the issues relating to the crime.

During Tuesday’s hearing on the CBI’s application, Indrani’s lawyer Gunjan Mangala told the court that her client did have any objection to her client being interrogated by CBI officials in the jail.

The hospital authorities submitted Indrani’s medical report in a sealed — cover to the court, which is likely to pass an order on Wednesday on the permission sought by her lawyer to meet her.

Indrani’s discharge from the JJ Hospital four days after she was  rushed from the Byculla women’s lock-up to the JJ Hospital for suspected drug overdose.
