With the Assembly elections due in next couple of months, the Assam Police is concerned about the presence of illegal arms in different parts of the State.
Director General of Assam Police, Mukesh Sahai said this on Friday while adding that the Assam Police have already intensified
operations to seize illegal arms and explosives across the State.
“We have so far recovered 83 illegal arms from different parts of the state including two AK 47 rifles, 810 rounds of ammunition, 47 grenades and 800 gms of explosives from different areas of the state,” said Sahai.
“Unfortunately, we do not have any estimate as to how many such illegal arms are there in Assam. So we have started the operation with an objective to seize all such illegal arms and
ammunition,” said the Assam DGP while adding that the police are also trying to execute the non-bailable warrants (NBWs) pending execution.
“The elections are approaching and we are doing our home works. As per the instruction of the Election Commission of India
(ECI), we have been executing the NBWs. So far we have executed 4,000 NBWs and there are 6,000 more such NBWs pending execution,” said the DGO while addressing the media.
It may be mentioned here that more than 50 percent of the polling booths in Assam are taken as safe now. However, there are 8000 sensitive polling booths in Assam and 3,000 hyper sensitive booths. Out of these 3,000 hypersensitive booths, 1,000 are marked as critical.
Sahai said that there is no input so far that some elements might try to trigger communal clashes in the state. “However, there
has been some sporadic incidents in the past couple of months and we are monitoring all such developments,” said the DGP.
