Human rights keep democracy alike: Danish scholar

PNS

(): A scholar from the School of Culture and Society, Aarhus University, Denmark, Dr Christian O Christiansen said that today the entire world community is concerned about human rights. Human rights are the only force that keeps democracy alive and helps it survive around the world. He was delivering a special lecture organised under the aegis of the Department of Political Science at DAV PG College here on Tuesday. Addressing the lecture organised on the topic ‘Justification of Socio-Economic Human Rights’, the keynote speaker, Dr Christian O Christiansen said that a healthy democracy is the pillar of strong social and economic human rights. He said that human rights cannot be kept within limited limits, just as democracy is not limited to the rights to vote. Similarly, he added that human rights reflect the real condition of the society more than the freedom of an individual.

He also explained the contributions of American political scientist Ralph Bunche in the context of socio-economic human rights.

According to him, America is full of contradictions and even today he seems to be in a state of dilemma regarding human rights. After this, Dr Christian also interacted with the students.
