High Court issues notice to Telangana Government on financial support to farmers

Omer Farooq

The farmers support scheme of the Telangana Government has run into trouble with the Hyderabad High Court issuing a notice to the Government about its method of choosing the beneficiaries.

The notice was issued by the High Court asking the Government to file its reply in two weeks on the basis of a letter written by a lawyer from Nalgonda Yadgiri Reddy. The lawyer alleged that the funds under the scheme were being misused. Under the Rythu Bandhu or the customer support scheme the state government was extending Rs 4000 per acre per crop to every farmer. The scheme benefitting 56 lakh farmers was estimated to cost Rs 8000 crore per annum.

The lawyer in his letter alleged that as the scheme was aimed at all the farmers and even rich farmers and those having govt jobs were also benefiting from it the funds were being misused. He demanded that the scheme should be confined only to the small and marginal farmers.

The High Court accepted the letter as a public interest litigation and issued the notice.
