Goa Chief Minister laxmikant Parsekar on Tuesday said the State Government had written to the Election Commission of India to relax the Model Code of Conduct in order to carry out developmental works across the state.

Speaking to The Pioneer on the sidelines of a private function in Panaji, Parsekar said that with the declaration of results of the February 4 elections was a almost month away and elections to the panchayat scheduled to be held in May, nearly five months would be lost out as far as key decision-making and commissioning of developmental tasks is concerned.

“The chief secretary has written to the Election Commission. We expect a favourable decision from them,” Parsekar said.

The model code of conduct was imposed by the poll authrority in Goa from January 4, exactly a month before the state assembly elections. Parsekar has claimed that all developmental works in the state were at a standstill from January 4 and no key decision-making is allowed due to the poll code.

He also said that a similar code of conduct was expected to be in place from April onwards for the upcoming panchayat elections, which are tentatively scheduled to be held in May this years.

“Because of the two code of conducts nearly five months will have passed without important decisions being taken and developmental work commissioned. That is why we have asked for relaxation,” Parsekar.
