Even as the final order on triple talaq is pending in the Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court, the Union Government has said that they would bring a legislation to stop triple talaq if necessary. Addressing the media on the sidelines of a programme in Bengaluru on Sunday, Union Minister for Urban Develop-
ment M Venkaiah Naidu indicated that the Centre would bring in a legislation to stop the triple talaq, if necessary, but after allowing the Muslim community to reach a positive conclusion following internal deliberations.
“The Government has made the stand very clear saying that we want this (triple talaq) to end. If necessary, the (Central) Government will bring in legislation, but after allowing the community to reach a positive conclusion after internal deliberations,” the Union Minister said.
Triple talaq is of gender discrimination and hence the Muslim community should give proper response to it. The Muslim women also have taken legal course and the matter is being heard in the Supreme Court, he said.
He said Muslims, like Hindus who have put to an end so many social evils, should come forward and move towards ending triple talaq, which was against the interests of women. “Dowry, sati, child marriage — all of these, the society came forward and finally decisions were made (to end these social evils).”
Noted activist and cine star Shabana Azmi said that triple talaq is inhumane, violates basic rights of every Muslim woman.
On superstar Rajinikanth meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Venkaiah said “Rajinikanth is a great actor. Modi is a great leader. If he wants to meet the Prime Minister, there is no problem”
However, he said he was not aware of any possible meeting between the actor and the Prime Minister.
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president Su Thirunavukkarasar has said that he believes the Tamil superstar will not join any national or regional political party but will only float his own party.
