Govt counsel sought Ambanis' presence as witness, says CBI

PNS

The CBI on Tuesday said special public prosecutor UU lalit acted on his own to seek the presence of ADAG chairman Anil Ambani and his wife Tina as prosecution witness in the 2G scam trial. The agency said it had not sought their presence in court.

According to top CBI sources, neither the agency sought the duo as prosecution witnesses in the case nor did the special public prosecutor seek the investigating body’s opinion before filing an application seeking their presence in the court. The trial court has summoned the Ambanis to depose before it on Friday.

Meanwhile, ahead of Ambanis’ deposition in the 2G case before the trial court on July 26, the Supreme Court on Tuesday directed the petition by Reliance Telecommunication challenging his summoning to be heard by the special 2G bench. The Court, however, refused to specify a date to hear the petition, leaving Ambanis to fret in uncertainty.

Reliance Telecomm unications limited (RTl) had approached the apex court challenging the July 19 order passed by the 2G court summoning Anil Ambani and Tina Ambani as witnesses in the case. RTl challenged the order claiming that there was no necessity to summon Ambanis in the case as only the company was accused. Moreover, it suggested that the order was passed at an advanced stage of trial.

Mentioning the matter before a bench of Justices GS Singhvi and V Gopala Gowda, senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi sought an urgent hearing of the case. Justice Singhvi, who is hearing the 2G cases along with Justice KS Radhakrishnan, directed the matter to be heard by the special bench. The sitting of this bench, fixed on Wednesday, was cancelled for some reason. When Rohatgi apprised the bench of this fact, Justice Singhvi assured that a decision in this regard was possible after consultation with the other judge.
