A day after the BJP and Congress workers fought on the streets of Guwahati over an objectionable statement against Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani by a Congress leader, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said that the BJP is trying to bring ‘Gunda Raj’ to Assam. Gogoi said the Assam Government has already ordered a probe which will be carried out by an Additional Chief Secretary level officer.
Gogoi also hinted that there is involvement of former Assam Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma behind the attack on Congress workers on Monday. Gogoi, however, said that so far he has got only some reports about Himanta Biswa Sarma’s involvement in the attack and that there is no evidence so far.
The police have already arrested nine BJP leaders including three senior leaders for their involvement in attacking the Congress headquarters in Guwahati yesterday as part of their agitation against the Congress leaders’ objectionable remark against Smriti Irani.
“They (BJP) have started Gunda Raj when there is a Congress Government in Assam. Just think what will happen if they come to power in Assam in the next year’s polls. The two senior leaders of the BJP also have criminal records. However, we are not going to allow Gunda Raj in Assam,’ Gogoi said while attacking the BJP leaders without taking their names.
“We do not support what Nilamoni Sen Deka had said. I asked him to apologise and he had apologised. After the apology also they (BJP) attacked the Congress workers inside the party headquarters. This is not only condemnable but also very rare in the history of political parties in India,” Gogoi said.
Gogoi added that the BJP has now engaged two of its women leaders-Union Minister for Foreign Affairs Sushma Swaraj and Union HRD minister Smriti Irani in Assam after Mahendra Singh and Ram Madhab failed to make their impacts felt.
