A Congress MP avoided a faux pas and quickly retracted a statement claiming that 60 per cent of the State’s population eats beef later saying that it was only 40 per cent.
South Goa MP Francisco Sardinha, while speaking to reporters on the prolonged stoppage of slaughter at Goa’s sole legal abattoir — the Goa Meat Complex — and subsequent shortage in the State.
“Over 60 per cent eat beef in Goa. And the shortage of beef and the rising prices of mutton are putting these meats out of the reach of common man,” Sardinha first said.
“Not 60%, only 40 per cent people eat beef, which includes Christians, Muslims and some young Hindus who eat the meat. The shortage is depriving them of a nutritious diet,” Sardinha later said attempting to make sure he was politically correct.
Beef in Goa is consumed by Christians who account for nearly 30% of the State’s population and Muslims who account for around 6%.
