The result of the election to the Guwahati Municipal Corporation in Assam finally proved that there is “Opposition” in Assam — contrary to the statement of State Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi who often says that “there is no Opposition in Assam”.
Although the ruling party has won in 19 wards in the election to the position of total 31 wards councillors under the corporation and is set to form the next council, yet the BJP had put up a brave fight to the ruling Congress and could manage to win in 11 wards.
While the AGP could manage to win only one ward in the election, the principal Opposition party of Assam legislative Assembly - All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) drew a blank in the polls. Similarly, among the election to 90 area sabha representatives - the saffron party could manage to win in 36 area sabhas. The Congress won in 50 area sabhas while the AGP candidates won in four area sabhas only. The AIUDF again drew a blank in election to area sabhas.
“CM Tarun Gogoi often says that there is no Opposition in Assam. But the people of Guwahati replied through the ballots that there is Opposition in the State,” said senior BJP leader Bijoya Chakraborty while interacting with mediapersons.
