The 72-year-old nun of a convent school at Ranaghat in Nadia district who was gang-raped last Saturday left the State silently in the small hours of Friday, sources in the general hospital where she was undergoing treatment said.

“The nun was taken away by a group of missionaries who came at about 2.30 am and got her discharged. She was taken from here to the airport and for precautions we let a female doctor accompany her,” said a hospital official adding the nun was seen-off at the Netaji Subhas Bose International Airport.

She was unwilling to stay back at Ranaghat and hence the Convent of Jesus and Mary authorities decided to fly her back to some other State, sources said. The name of the State was not given.

Elsewhere at the CID headquarters in Kolkata the officers on Friday conducted intense grilling of the two persons: The security guard of the school where the incident took place and a stray history-sheeter who was picked up on Thursday evening and whose face resembled with one of those caught in the CCTV camera of the school.

“The statements of the guard was particularly incoherent with the chain of events and the statements made by other witnesses,” a senior police officer said adding the duo had however not been arrested thus far.

Two other persons stated to be Bangladeshi nationals were picked from Raiganj in North Bengal, police said adding they were trying to ascertain whether they were linked to the Ranaghat case.

Meanwhile, there was a deep sense of rage amongst the people of Ranaghat who protested the vindictive attitude of the Trinamool Government which had filed criminal cases against a number of

“anti-social elements” who had earlier gheraoed Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for more than an hour seeking justice for the raped nun.

“They could not arrest the real culprits now they are harassing the innocent people who wanted clarifications from the Chief Minister whom they have voted to power” a local said adding, “If Mamata Banerjee continued with such zamindari attitude then she will soon lose power.”
