GAIL subsidiary commissions 1.25 MTPA PTA manufacturing plant in Mangalore

GAIL Mangalore Petrochemicals Limited (GMPL), a wholly owned subsidiary of GAIL (India) Limited, has successfully commissioned its 1.25 Million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA) Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) manufacturing plant at the Mangalore Special Economic Zone (MSEZ) in Karnataka.

The commissioning marks a significant step in GAIL’s efforts to strengthen its presence in the downstream petrochemical sector and expand India’s domestic manufacturing capacity for a key industrial raw material.

JBF Petrochemicals Limited (JBPL) originally established the plant, which later underwent the Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process (CIRP). In 2023, GAIL acquired the company through the insolvency resolution process following approval of its resolution plan by the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT).

Following the acquisition, GAIL undertook an extensive revival and refurbishment exercise to restore the facility to operational readiness. The process involved overcoming several engineering, technological and operational challenges before achieving successful commissioning.

The development is expected to strengthen domestic availability of PTA, a critical raw material used to manufacture polyester fibre, yarn, PET resin, and other polyester-based products. With an installed capacity of 1.25 MTPA, the Mangalore facility will significantly add to India’s domestic PTA manufacturing capacity, potentially reducing dependence on imports and supporting growth in the country’s downstream polyester industry.

Strategically located near New Mangalore Port, the plant is supported by dedicated logistics infrastructure to facilitate the efficient movement of raw materials and finished products. GAIL will market the manufactured PTA under the brand name ‘G-Tex’, utilising its established marketing network and customer base.

The successful commissioning reflects GAIL’s broader strategy to expand its petrochemical business and strengthen its position across the value chain. It also marks the revival of a major industrial asset and opens a new chapter in the company’s downstream petrochemical growth.

The company acknowledged sustained management support and the collective efforts of the GMPL team, technology partners, consultants, contractors, and other stakeholders in bringing the facility back into operation.
