If anything that brought the five arrested culprits in Thursday’s Mumbai gang-rape case together as friends for quite some time was liking for drugs, liquor, pornography, gambling, hooliganism and eve-teasing.
Of the five arrested accused, Chand Shaikh (18), Vijay Mohan Jadhav (21), Kasim Shaikh (21), Shiraj Rehman Khan (21) and Salim Ansari (22), three of them — Chand, Jadhav and Kasim — are history-sheeters. Investigations have, however, revealed that all five of them routinely indulged in petty thefts like making away with copper-wires and selling. “Apart from the common thread of drug, liquor, pornography, eve-teasing and hooliganism, one common thing that made as thick as thieves was their perennial unemployment,” a senior police officer said.
