The Union Budget (2017-2018) presented by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Wednesday evoked mixed reactions from various spectrum of society. MK Stalin, working president of the DMK, who is also the leader of the Opposition described the Budget proposals as disappointing and directionless. “There is nothing in these budget proposals to address the ever

increasing suicides by farmers because of crop failure,” said Stalin when asked about his reaction to the Budget.

Vaiko, founder leader of MDMK, said people of Tamil Nadu were pinning great hopes on the project to interlink the major rivers in the country which alone could solve the draught and flood ravaging India on an yearly basis.

“The NDA in its election manifesto released in the run up to the 2014 lS election has promised to interlink major rivers in India. There is no mention about this scheme in this year’s proposals or in past Budgets presented by Minister Jaitley,” said Vaiko.
