The recent suicide by a farmer witnessed in the national Capital has triggered a demand for setting up a judicial enquiry into all farmer deaths and a compensation policy, as part of a fresh PIl, was filed in Supreme Court on Friday.
Citing National Crime Records Bureau figures, the PIl was filed by advocate GS Mani which sought to highlight the big picture of farmer suicides in the country and the need for Central and State Governments to devise effective policies.
According to the petition, 46 farmers commit suicide every day. Between 2005 and 2013, 2,96,438 farmers committed suicide. The highest number, 18,241, was witnessed in the year 2004.
