Police in Andhra Pradesh's cyclone-hit districts have been clearing fallen trees and electric poles round the clock to keep roads open, with officials saying patrolling will continue in affected areas even as the weather eases.

In Bapatla district, Superintendent of Police B Umamaheswar said police worked with other departments under a pre-planned arrangement, and that staff cleared trees brought down by strong winds within minutes so that traffic was not disrupted. Teams also acted quickly where electric poles fell across roads.

The officer said Bapatla escaped major danger as the cyclone moved north, but that patrolling would continue. He asked people not to panic and to follow police and government advice until the system has fully passed.

People have been told not to go near fallen electric poles, not to visit beaches until an official announcement, and not to enter fast-flowing water. Those needing help can call the district police control room on 8333813228 or dial 112.

Restoration work is under way across the coastal districts after the cyclone uprooted trees, flattened crops and disrupted power supply.
