An elderly person have hanged himself at a remote village in Assam’s Dhubri district allegedly after failing to find the names of three members of the family in the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

Tension has gripped Golakganj area along the Indo-Bangladesh border in Assam’s Dhubri district on Tuesday after some locals found Debendra Barman (70) hanging from a tree near his house.

While names of Barman, his wife Shoma and daughter-in-law Konika figured in the NRC, names of his son Mahendra and two grand kids did not appear in the draft NRC published by the Government of Assam on July 30.

Villagers said that Barman went into depression after failing to find the names of three members of the family in the NRC.

IT may be mentioned here that the NRC left out names of 40,07,707 people of the state out of the register for some problems. Dhubri Superintendent of Police longnit Terang, however, said that the reason behind his death is yet to be ascertained. “Preliminary investigation indicates it to be a case of suicide. However, it is difficult to link his suicide to NRC because his name figured in the NRC followed by names of two other members of his family,” Terang said.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has been reiterating that no genuine Indian citizens, whose name did not figure in the draft NRC, should not fear as they would be given ample opportunity to enter their names in the final NRC. The Government will undertake a rigorous process through the NRC Seva Kendras from August 10 till September 30 to inform the reasons for non inclusion of their names to these over 40 lakh people.
