Known detractor of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former Gujarat Director General of Police RB Sreekumar has demanded public disclosure of the Nanavati Commission report on the 2002 Gujarat riots.

The commission of inquiry was constituted in March 2002 to enquire into Godhra train fire incident on of February 27, 2002 and subsequent incidents of violence in the State.

Shreekumar has also written a letter to Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel in which he has asked why the Nanavati Commission report had not been placed before the State Assembly even after more than year since it was submitted to the Government. The copies of the letter have also been sent to Assembly Speaker Ganapatsinh Vasava and leader of the Opposition Shankarsinh Vaghela.

“The responsibility and accountability relating to the publication of the Commission Report will be on the Political Executive of the State Government. So, any delay in this matter can evoke avoidable criticism from political circles, public order experts and agile citizens,” said the former DGP.

In the letter, he alleged that as a citizen, residing in Gujarat, since 1973, it is quite painful to note that no MlA of Gujarat State had also moved, at appropriate level, for ensuring the release of the Commission report by the State Government. He further said that it is an obvious instance of breach of legislature’s privilege by the Executive Wing of the Government.
