One more elephant calf was found dead near a railway track in Assam’s Goalpara district on Tuesday.
Although it is suspected to have been hit by speeding train, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) officials here, however, said that there no no such reports or intimation by any loco pilots in the previous night.
“We have eceived information about an elephant calf lying beside railway track in the vicinity of Amjonga railway station,” said NFR Chief spokesperson Pranavjyoti Sharma on Tuesday.
A speeding train had on Monday wee hours hit a herd of elephants at Jugijan area in Central Assam’s Hojai district and killed three elephants including two pregnant females. One of the slain elephants also delivered a stillborn calf due to the impact.
“On duty railway patrolman while doing patrol duty detected a dead elephant calf lying between Rangjuli and Amjonga railway station under Rangiya Division in Goalpara district,” the spokesman said.
He said that the patrolman immediately informed concerned railway authority.
“The spot is at about 85 kms from New Bongaigaon station. However no on duty loco pilot, Asst. loco Pilot or Guards of trains passing over that section reported any incident of dashing elephant,” he said.
“The area is not an elephant corridor and train running is going on safely and smoothly over that section,” he added.
