The Election Commission on Thursday issued show cause notice to Union Minister Beni Prasad Verma on his controversial remarks against BJP PM candidate Narendra Modi.

Verma was found by the Commission of prima facie violating the Model Code of Conduct for calling Modi a “goon”. He was asked to give his response till Saturday evening. An FIR has already been registered against Verma in Balrampur for calling BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi the “biggest goonda” of RSS and party’s president Rajnath Singh his “slave”.

While serving him the notice, the EC reminded Verma of the clause of the Model Code of Conduct which bars parties and candidates from criticising all aspects of private life, not connected with the public activities of the leaders or workers of the rival parties.

Meanwhile, the Commission has sought the original CD of Amit Shah’s speech from the Uttar Pradesh poll officials for handing it over to the BJP leader, who demanded it after being served with a show cause notice for prima facie violation of Model Code of Conduct over his “revenge” remarks.

Sources in the EC said that after the CD is received from the UP poll authorities and handed over to Shah, the poll body will initiate further action only after hearing the BJP leader further on the issue.Shah had urged the Election Commission to reconsider its notice to him for his alleged “revenge” remarks claiming the statement has not been recorded in the right perspective. Shah denied having made any “revenge” remarks in his speech in western Uttar Pradesh.
