The Election Commission of India on Sunday gave out a strong reply to Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s strongly-worded letter, questioning the transfer by the Election Commission of some senior IPS officers including Kolkata Police Commissioner Anuj Sharma.
Rejecting Banerjee’s allegation, the Commission said that it “does not need to prove its credibility” and that the action taken by the ECI was in the interest of free and fair elections.”
The Chief Minister had in her letter termed the EC decision to transfer four senior IPS officers, including Sharma and his Bidhannagar counterpart Gyanwant Singh “highly arbitrary, motivated and biased towards BJP.” These officials had been debarred from election duty.
